We are the dead ... (from Flanders Fields)

There is only one generation left that will remember D-Day.  I remember feeling the same way about Armistice Day.  Most people under 40 do not know what the day portends, the thousands of American GI’s that left home and never returned is shrugged off.  The sun rises, the sun sets, life goes on, and the blood of past hero’s is forgotten.
Another such event happened in 1948.  A nation that was, and was not, was again.  The last generation that remembers a time when Israel was not is dying off.  Will the modern Israeli make the same sacrifice that a hopeless people found hope in?

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

  1. I had the honor of placing wreaths on the graves in Flanders Fields a couple of times a year while we lived in Germany. Never failed to bring a lump to my throat every time. But May and June were the best because the poppies were blooming. Awe inspiring.
